AMOLED, maps, full training suite
A premium AMOLED running watch with the full Garmin training suite, maps, and open data export — but, unlike newer Forerunners, it has no ECG hardware, so it is wellness-only.
What it measures
Optical heart rate, SpO2 (Pulse Ox), overnight HRV Status, sleep, respiration, stress, Body Battery, multiband GNSS, and a full training-load/VO2/recovery suite. No ECG or skin temperature.
Regulatory status
Wellness-only — this model has no ECG hardware (the FDA-cleared Garmin ECG app is on the FR 970/165 and Venu line, not the 965).
Validation & accuracy
Garmin GPS and optical HR are well regarded for the category; the 965 uses Elevate Gen 4, a generation behind the Gen 5 ECG-capable models.
Data control & export
Raw data: open — Garmin Connect exports FIT/TCX/GPX/CSV per activity. API: open — Garmin Health / Activity API and Connect IQ.
Wearability & battery
A light titanium-bezel AMOLED watch with full maps, multiband GPS, and multi-day battery.
Cost & access
One-time ~$599 MSRP (often ~$499). No required subscription; optional Connect+.
Who it serves
Serious runners who want a premium training watch with portable data and don’t need ECG.
Who is left out or burdened
No ECG despite a premium price; superseded by the FR 970 (which adds ECG and skin temperature).
✓ Strengths
- Open FIT/TCX/GPX/CSV export and Health API
- AMOLED, full offline maps, multiband GPS
- Deep training-load and recovery suite
- Cross-platform; free core data
✕ Weaknesses
- No ECG on this model (unlike the FR 970)
- Premium price for a non-cleared feature set
- SpO2 wellness-grade
- Superseded by the FR 970
40
Why this clinical score. Wellness-only with no ECG keeps it below the cleared Garmin watches, though above SpO2-only trackers on validation reputation.
74
Why this empowerment score. Garmin’s open export formats, developer API, and free core data make it one of the more empowering watches.
80
Why this everyday score. AMOLED, full maps, and a deep training suite make it a top everyday running watch.
